art studio extension

In 2003 Gary and Derek were commissioned to design a studio extension to an existing family house in Maidenhead. The brief required a lofty, voluminous, light-filled space with a separate conservatory to keep a collection of various plants.

The design needed to consider a mature sycamore tree along the boundary of the site which helped inform the decision to split the roofs into two mono-pitches. The lower and upper roof are divided by a line of clerestory windows which provide diffuse afternoon sun into the main studio.

Full Planning and Building Regulations applications were carried out and the project was taken through to its completion on site.

“Transformation: From a broken down garage and a leaking lean-to roof, it has become a working studio, with a linking conservatory to my living space. In addition I have gained a small cloakroom with overhead storage. The bonus is that the studio also leads directly to a small courtyard garden.”
