Birkirkara Townhouse, Malta

Originally a grand house with a good sized garden - later split into three lots with a sixties extension built into the garden. The main objectives of this intervention was to restore the original part of the house including the surrounding garden wall and replace the dilapidated extension with a two storey wing housing the living areas at garden level and an additional two bedrooms above. The new extension is a simple looking structure made out of a restricted palette that respects its context. The new wing’s design is based on passive principles. The result is a reposeful haven complete with all the comforts of a true home, yet without a chance of forgetting its incredible past.

“This Birkirkara home is an architectural feat, forging a special relationship between old and young, indoor and outdoor.”

- Homeworks Magazine HW73, The Relationship
